Story

James E. Pepper, bartender and esteemed bourbon aristocrat, was said to have invented the drink in Louisville in 1880.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon sugar or sugar cube
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 2 oz bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)

Steps

  1. Add the sugar and bitters into old fashioned glass, add the water, and stir until the sugar is nearly dissolved.
  2. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add bourbon, stir until well-chilled.

Garnish
